Biography Erik A. Moses Director, District of Columbia Department of Small and Local Business Development
Erik A. Moses serves as the Director of the District of Columbia's Department of Small and Local Business Development. In this capacity, Mr. Moses manages the agency charged with fostering the economic growth, development, and retention of District-based businesses. Mr. Moses serves as the District’s chief advocate for local businesses, and advises the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development and the Mayor on all programs, policies, and issues related to or affecting the local business community. Prior to being appointed Director by Mayor Adrian M. Fenty, Mr. Moses served as the Deputy Director of the agency from March 2006 to January 2007.
Throughout his professional career Mr. Moses has worked with large and small companies and entrepreneurs to achieve their business objectives. Mr. Moses has expertise in structuring and negotiating complex transactions, drafting commercial agreements and has routinely counseled businesses on various matters affecting their operations.
Mr. Moses began his career in private practice in Washington, DC with the law firm of Dow Lohnes PLLC representing several large media and communications companies in merger and acquisition transactions as well as regulatory and compliance matters following the passage of the landmark Telecommunications Act of 1996. As an associate attorney, Mr. Moses served as lead counsel in scores of transactions to acquire and sell commercial radio and television stations throughout the country, including assisting one of the firm’s broadcast clients to become the single largest owner of commercial television stations in the nation.
Mr. Moses left private legal practice to join the America Online division of the world’s largest media company AOL Time Warner. At AOL he served as the primary legal counsel to several business units including Mapquest, Moviefone, AOL Entertainment and Digital Media Services, Inc., among others. Mr. Moses later served as a director of business development for the International and Web Services division where he was responsible for building strategic alliances and other commercial partnerships related to the development and distribution of new products and services. He is the co-founder of Legacy Holdings LLC, a private investment partnership.
Mr. Moses received his B.A. in Political Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his JD from the Duke University School of Law. Mr. Moses is a member of the Maryland bar and the District of Columbia bar. Mr. Moses is actively involved in the community and is a member of various boards of nonprofit organizations. He is married and has two children. |
